Anesthesiology Assistant
JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary : Under general direction of an anesthesiologist, the anesthesiology assistant administers anesthetics and/or monitors the anesthetized patient during surgical, obstetric, and radiological procedures.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include any and/or all of the following:
Evaluates the patient pre-operatively by interviewing and examining the patient; assesses data; selects appropriate anesthetic. Administers anesthetics in accordance with clinical privileges delineated and any conditions or restrictions imposed thereof. Monitors, interprets, and evaluates information derived from monitors intraopertatively on the patient of any age group and physical status; protects patient's life functions and vital organs. Performs medical non-surgical procedures, i.e. IV insertion, intubation, hemodynamic monitoring, fuel and electrolyte maintenance, and airway management in routine and acute medical situations. Monitors the patient's post-operative care and performs evaluation of the patient. Prepares drugs; maintains anesthesia equipment to keep in safe operating condition. Maintains accounting of controlled substances; performs other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Knowledge of anesthesia equipment Knowledge of medical technology Counseling/advising skills Interpersonal/human relations skills Ability to learn and apply institutional policies and procedures Ability to push patients in carts and/or wheelchairs Ability to adapt to work environment changes Ability to maintain records Ability to maintain confidentiality MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience equivalent to:
Master's degree; supplemented with certification from an approved anesthesiology program, and state license.
